Utrecht is a compact city that is best discovered by foot or bike. So rent a bike and feel like a local. Every Utrechter owns at least one bike, so you won’t be on your own when biking through the streets and along the canals.
Biking in Utrecht can be a little overwhelming if you are not used to it, especially during rush hour around central station. Some statistics will tell you that there are at least 100.000 cyclists on the road every day in downtown Utrecht. Just go with the flow and you’ll be fine. There are a lot of places where you can rent a bike. For a day, a month and everything in between.
4 Places to rent a bike
Here are 4 centrally located shops to rent a bike, a tandem or a e-bike and accessories like helmets (however, although safe, it’s not something you’ll see a lot of dutch city bikers wear). Rental prices start at just € 7 per day.
- Willemstraat-bike.nl (Dutch site; prices start at € 7 per day)
- CovanBeek.nl (English site; prices start at € 7,50 per day)
- Ton van den IJssel (Dutch site; prices start at € 7,50 per day)
- VVV Bike Rental (English site; prices start at €10 per day)
If you want to rent a bike I’ll advise you to make a reservation, especially during high season and weekends. Some sites are in Dutch, so may be a bit hard to read. Don’t let this scare you, the shop owners do speak English. Just give them a call or send an email and before you know you’ll be biking as a local.
